Washington University to Name Engineering School After Square Co-Founder Jim McKelvey

Jim McKelvey is one of the most successful entrepreneurs in recent memory to come out of St. Louis and Washington University. A building at his alma mater will now also carry his name with the renaming of The School of Engineering & Applied Science.

The James McKelvey School of Engineering was made possible to an unprecedented financial commitment from Mckelvey. The plans for the new school were officially announced in Whitaker Hall Atrium on January 31.

McKelvey's donation will go towards endowed scholarships, professorships and some of the dean's top agenda items. The gift was fitting as his father, James Sr., was a former dean of the engineering school.

McKelvey is best known as the co-founder of the credit card reader, Square. He designed the hardware for the innovation, was the company's first chairman and currently sits on the Board of Directors.

McKelvey has launched several other St. Louis-based startups, like Six Thirty, LaunchCode, Third Degree Glass Factory and Mira publishing. He is currently the independent director of the St. Louis Federal Reserve.

McKelvey has received several awards from Washington University, including the school's Alumni Achievement Award and the Robert S. Brookings Award. He is also a previous member of their Alumni Board of Governors.
