Chris Riddell Biography

Chris Riddell is an illustrator and cartoonist that is based out of the United Kingdom. Riddell has won numerous awards for his work, including three Kate Greenaway Medals for best-illustrated children’s book. He has also won several Nestle Smarties Book Prizes. Riddell was born in South Africa, where his family was opposed to the apartheid system. This is where Riddell got an early look at politics, and helped to lead him to become a political cartoonist. Riddell traveled throughout his childhood, and also lived in England and Egypt. In the 1980s Riddell worked at The Economist and in the 1990s he worked at The Observer.
